Sweden in Winter – The Perfect Destination
Sweden in the winter is the perfect destination if you are looking for a cozy getaway. Winter in Sweden is mostly known for the Northern lights, skiing in the north, the ice hotel in Swedish Lapland and all that is associated with snow. But did you know that you can enjoy winter just as much in the capitol of Sweden, with or without snow?
Best Winter Wonderland Activities In Stockholm
- Christmas markets – If you want to experience a traditional Christmas market, heading to Sweden is a good idea. You must try mulled wine (glögg) and gingerbread cookies (pepparkakor) and pick up some traditional Swedish handicraft. Stockholm offers many Christmas markets, such as the genuine Christmas market in the Old Town of Stockholm, the Christmas market at Skansen which has become a holiday tradition, or the Christmas market at Drottningholm, where you also can discover the royal palace.
- Ice skating - Ever tried ice skating across frozen lakes? In Stockholm there are multiple places to go Ice skating, where you can skate your way through frosty landscape to the sound of the wind cradling the pine trees and your skates hitting the ice. If you think this sounds scary, there are multiple rinks in the heart of the city! This is a winter wonderland experience for sure!
- Lucia celebration – If you visit Sweden in early or mid-December, you must take part in celebrating the 400-year old tradition of Lucia. Then you will see girls and boys emerge from the darkness of a Swedish winters day and gently silence the crowds with a procession of light. The Lucia wears a crown of lights and is followed with maidens in white gowns carrying lights, all singing beautiful melodies. Enjoy this magical celebration, and if you are lucky, they might even hand out saffron buns.
- Winter Baths – Swimming in the ocean when there is snow on the ground might not be the first thing that comes to mind when people think of enjoyable winter activities. But Winter Baths are actually a thing, and jumping in to the ocean after spending some time in the sauna is even scientifically proven to be really good for you. It raises one’s feel-good hormones, lowers stress and improves sleep (but should be avoided if you have a heart or circulation problem). Winter Baths could be enjoyed at many locations in Stockholm, but Saltsjöbaden offers many beautiful locations.
